We're now recruiting...
Fruit & Veg Retail Earthling
Saturday 17th Dec 2011Our seasonal fresh fruit & vegetables form a vital department within our busy food market –one that we’re renowned for and justifiably proud of. It’s therefore critical that you know how to store, manage and display them for maximum effect. In addition to knowing your onions – and your celery from your celeriac – you’ll also be aware of seasonality and will probably have either ‘grown your own’ or worked on a farm or allotment at some point. You’ll have a keen interest in cooking and therefore will know how to identify more unusual veg and herbs, and how to prepare and cook them in the kitchen – so you can pass on this mine of information to our customers. We’re looking for someone with a passion and flair for fresh produce - quick to learn and keen to share knowledge - a self-starter who also works well within a team, and who can communicate well with customers.
This role involves lifting and carrying heavy goods, so you’ll need to have good overall fitness levels and a fair bit of stamina. You’ll also be proficient with numbers so you can check off deliveries and help with ordering. And if you have a current, clean driving license and have experience of driving a van, it would be a distinct advantage.
Responsibilities and requirements:
- Ensuring that our fruit and veg is well looked after and displayed – that stock is properly rotated, inspected and that wastage is minimised and efficiently recorded;
- Loading and unloading deliveries and checking them off against our orders;
- Assisting in the ordering and management of the fruit and veg department;
- Good head for figures - ability to weigh and pack correct amounts for delivery;
- Weighing and packing produce;
- Setting up the store in the mornings and/or cleaning down the store at night and ensuring that the fruit and veg is properly stored at correct temperature levels;
- Serving customers: anything from advising them about what’s in season and how to cook it, to packing and carrying their bags;
- Manning the tills - cash and card transactions;
- Taking deliveries: unpacking, checking against orders, quality control, pricing and displaying goods;
- Maintaining exemplary standards of food safety and hygiene;
- Answering the phones: dealing with customer, supplier and other enquiries – as and when required to do so;
- Providing support at Earthy events;
- Working nicely with other Earthlings;
- Working flexibly, including weekends, early or late shifts, as required;
- The willingness and ability to lift and carry goods on a daily basis.
This is a full time position based at our Portobello store (circa 40 hrs per week) and includes weekend working - we're open 7 days a week. Starting salary is £6.20 per hour. NO AGENCIES PLEASE. We will ONLY accept applications for this role via email - please do not hand in your CV or apply in-store or by phone.If you'd like to apply for this role, then please send an email explaining why you'd make a great Earthling, along with your CV to: muriel@earthy.co.uk
